Peach Bowl
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GACharter a Private Jet to the Peach Bowl
The scrappy Peach Bowl, which has fallen in and out of favor with bowl selection committees since it was founded in 1968, was not left out of the mix when the six major bowls were selected for the College Football Playoff series in 2014.
It was chosen to join the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, and Fiesta bowls in the playoff rotation.
While it’s Bowl Mania for football fans on and around the beginning of every New Year, with schools competing in some 40 NCAA bowl games, only the best of the best compete in the elite playoff bowls.

Peach Bowl History
- The structure of playoffs changed in the 2014-2015 season when the college Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was changed to the College Football Playoffs. The Peach Bowl, one of six chosen to host playoff games, will host a playoff semi-final game every three years. In between, it will host games between highly ranked teams that don’t get a CFP Bowl bid.
- Peach Bowl, Inc., was founded in 1967 by the Georgia Lion’s Club. It hosted its first NCAA-sanctioned Peach Bowl in 1968.
- Calling itself “the most charitable bowl,” the Peach pays for academic coaches to help athletes academically in all the inner-city Atlanta high schools. It also has given some $5 million in endowed scholarships to 25 universities, for which any inner-city Atlanta high school student can apply.
- The Peach Bowl donates $50,000 a year to the Lions Club for vision screenings. Football players assist in the screenings.
- The likelihood of inclement weather for a New Year’s Day matchup in Atlanta – first at Georgia Tech’s Grant Field and then at the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium – put the Peach Bowl out of favor with bowl selection committees. That changed in 1992 when the Peach Bowl was moved to the Georgia Dome, home of the Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia State Panthers.
- In 1996, sponsor Chick-fil-A changed the name “Peach Bowl” to “Chick-fil-A Bowl.”
- In 2017, the Georgia Dome was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which has a retractable roof and holds about 75,000 football spectators. It is the home field of the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United Football Club. Georgia State meanwhile got its own home, acquiring Turner Field and renovating it into Georgia State Field.
- In 2014, a year after the Chick-fil-A Bowl was chosen to be one of the six bowls to host teams in the College Football Playoff series, “Peach” was added back into its name. It is officially the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl once again.
- In 2009, Atlanta secured a 30-year deal with the National Football Foundation to acquire the College Football Hall of Fame from South Bend, Ind.
