Private Jet Rental Costs
In most cases private jet providers calculate the hourly rate to estimate the costs of a private jet rental.
How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Private Jet?
The cost to rent a private jet varies from $2,000 - $14,000 per billable flight hour. These hourly rates include a broad selection of aircraft from turboprops to the finest executive jets in the sky. In addition to the hourly rental rates, which include aircraft, crew, insurance, and fuel, several other factors contribute to the overall price of renting a private jet.
The most economical private jets - Turboprops, Very Light Jets, or Executive Light Jets - cost around $2,600 to $3,500 per flight hour. Midsize or Super Midsize Jets cost between $4,000 and $8,000 per hour. Large and Ultra Long Range Jets cost between $8,000 and $14,000 per hour within the US, and possibly higher internationally.
Ultra-luxury VIP Airliners such as the Lineage 1000, BBJs, and ACJs in executive configurations cost anywhere from $16,000 to 23,000 per billable flight hour.

Private Jet Rental Price Factors
Billable Flight Time
Billable flight time, calculated on an hourly basis, is the primary cost driver when renting a private jet. It includes positioning time, airborne time, and the standard two hours per day minimum charge, when applicable. Billable flight time refers to wheels up to wheels down and does not include taxi time.
Aircraft Category
Aircraft categories classify private jets based on their size and capabilities. The cost of hiring a private jet increases with its category. Private jet rental rates start at $2,000 per hour for Turbo Props, reach up to $14,000 for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and exceed $23,000 for VIP Airliners.
Aircraft Type
There are a variety of aircraft types within each category of private jets. Some aircraft types are slightly more expensive than others based on their comfort level, performance, and market demand. You can expect price variations from $200 to $2,000 per hour or more.
Age of Aircraft
The hourly rental rate of a newer aircraft is higher per hour than an older plane. Prices can vary from $100 to $1,000 per hour or more.

US Segment Fees
Segment fees are a government tax calculated per passenger and vary by region. In 2024 the US segment fee is $5.00 per passenger, per leg.
International Fees
Depending on the event and the region, the international fees can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000 or more. They include landing permits, overflight permits, customs, and immigration fees whenever required by your route of flight and the country of your arrival.

Other Expenses, Costs & Fees
Crew Over Nights
Crew overnight and per diem fees are between $200 and $400 per crew member per night to cover food, lodging, and other expenses related to being away from home.
Short Leg fees
Short-leg fees generally apply to larger aircraft categories and are set by the aircraft owner for flights under a specified duration. The industry standard for short leg fees varies by jet category: 2 hours for Super Midsize Jets and Large Jets, 2.5 hours for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and 3 hours for VIP Airliners.
Aircraft Positioning Cost
Aircraft positioning fees are based on the amount of flight time accumulated to position the aircraft to pick up passengers and for the aircraft to fly back to its home base.
Hangar Fees
Hangar fees are most commonly incurred in icy conditions to prevent ice, snow, or frost from accumulating on aircraft surfaces and to avoid deicing costs. Based on the size of the aircraft, hangar fees can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500 per day.
Fuel Surcharge
A fuel surcharge is applicable when there is a surge in fuel prices in the market. Fuel surcharges can add $600 to $900 per hour or more depending on the size of the aircraft. Paramount Business Jets rental prices are inclusive of fuel surcharges unless specified otherwise.
Aircraft Daily Minimums
Operators require a certain amount of minimum hour charge per day depending on the aircraft size. For example, for turboprops the daily minimums are 1.5 hours, for light and midsize it's 2.0 hours and for super midsize, large, and ultra-long range, the daily minimums are 2.5 hours.
Landing Fees
Landing fees are charged by the airport authority to maintain the facility and the expenses vary by airport. Landing fees typically range from $150 to $500, varying based on the aircraft's size and weight.
Ramp and Handling
Ramp and handling fees are anywhere from $100 to $500 per visit, charged by the fixed-base operator to handle and park the aircraft. These fees are sometimes waived if a minimum amount of fuel is purchased.
-
Incidental Charges (not included in your main bill)
Wi-Fi Charges
Wi-Fi fees range from $3.00 to $8.50 per megabyte depending on the region. Wi-Fi usage on a private flight from Europe to the USA can cost from $3,000 to $6,000. A private jet charter broker can arrange for an aircraft that offers free Wi-Fi.
Pet Cleaning Fees
Cleaning fees are sometimes charged when a mishap occurs, requiring deep cleaning and carpet shampooing. Generally speaking, a standard carpet shampoo can cost $250 to $500 or more.
Deicing Charges
Whenever snow, ice, or even frost accumulates on aircraft surfaces, deicing is necessary. It is charged per application. Deicing can cost from $1,500 for smaller aircraft to $10,000 or more for larger aircraft.
Ambulift Assistance
If needed, the cost for using an ambulift to board or disembark a private jet in a wheelchair ranges from $250 to $750. A quote for these services will be provided for your approval.

How to Calculate the Private Jet Rental Cost?
Here is the breakdown and explanation of charges and fees of a domestic round-trip private jet rental. Essentially, this is a time, speed, and distance calculation. Using a sample route between Minneapolis and Phoenix, we itemize all the costs that make up the total private jet rental price for the respective flight.
A sample route of a round trip between Minneapolis and Phoenix
Scenario 1: Minneapolis to Phoenix - Sample Fees
Here is a line-by-line breakdown of charges that make up the total private jet rental cost of a common private jet flight. The tax rates used are 2024 tax rates.
Trip Type | Round Trip |
---|---|
PAX | 4 Passengers |
Route | Minneapolis, MN to Phoenix, AZ |
Duration of Trip | 3 days, 2 nights |
Departure Airport | KMSP – St. Paul International Airport |
Destination Airport | KPHX – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport |
Total Distance | 2,552 miles |
Aircraft Size | Midsize Jet |
Hourly Rate | $3,750/hour |
Average Speed | 400 mph |
Billable Flight Time | 7.4 hours (includes 30 min each leg for take-off and taxi) |
Flight Cost | $27,750.00 |
Crew Overnight Cost * | $1,500.00 |
Landing Fees | $1000.00 |
Subtotal | $30,250.00 |
Federal Excise Tax | $2,268.75 |
Segment Fees | $40 |
Total Cost | $32,559.75 |
The total distance for this trip is 2,552 (one-way - 1,276 miles x 2) divided by the average speed of 400 mph equals a total flight time of 6.4 hours plus 30 minutes (15 minutes for take-off and 15 minutes for taxi) times 2 equals billable time of 7.4 hours.
The flight time of 7.4 hours multiplied by the hourly rate of $3,750 equals a total of $27,750.
Average overnight costs and per diem for the crew are $750 per night for a 2-person crew totaling $1,500.
Flight time minimums of 6 hours (3 days × 2 hours = 6 hours) have been exceeded for this itinerary and do not come into the calculation of the rental price.
The flight cost of $27,750 plus the crew cost of $1,500 and $1,000 gives us a subtotal of $30,250.
Segment Fees are $5.00 per passenger, per flight leg, times 4 passengers equals $40.00.
Adding in the 7.5% FET and segment fees amounts to a total all-inclusive rental price of $32,554.75

How Much Do Private Jets of Different Sizes Cost?
Aircraft are categorized by size, depending on the range and passenger capacity. The larger the aircraft, the greater the range, passenger and baggage capacities, and hourly rental rates will be.
Prices for private jets vary by size, type, and age among other factors
When choosing an aircraft size, consider which aircraft has the range to fly to your destination without fuel stops. A smaller aircraft requiring a fuel stop will have a lower hourly rate, but fuel stops increase travel time and additional costs, not always resulting in the savings you were expecting.

How is the Hourly Rental Rate of a Jet Determined?
The hourly jet rental rates cover the charges of owning and operating the aircraft. The hourly rate is a combination of the fixed and variable costs spread over the expected total hours of usage per year.
Fixed costs include:
- Crew Salaries
- Benefits and Training
- Aircraft and Operating Insurance
- Aircraft Storage
- Aircraft Refurbishment
Variable costs are incurred in proportion to aircraft usage and include fuel, oil, maintenance, and even crew fees if paid per hour and not on salary.
An aircraft’s total expected hours of usage per year ultimately determines the hourly rental cost for an airplane. To sustain yearly costs of $2M, 200 flight hours of expected usage means a breakeven of $10,000 per hour. 400 hours will reduce the hourly cost to $5,000 per hour. The examples below will further explain how expected usage and daily flight time minimums play into the overall cost of renting a private jet.
How Much Does an Empty Leg Flight Cost?
Empty legs are generally 30% - 40% less than the cost of a standard charter rate. In some cases, if an aircraft must re-position urgently, even better deals can be had.
Around one-third of all private jet flights fly empty. In the United States, that is around 250 flights per day. Brokers have access to all of these empty-leg flights. The savings can be significant for clients, especially on long-distance or international flights, as they don’t need to buy a return journey.
Smaller jets and shorter flights produce smaller savings while longer flights and larger jets can offer huge savings. On light jets heading up and down the East Coast, you’ll save around $5,000 - $6,000. Cross-country flights in the USA can produce savings of $30,000 - $50,000. Transcontinental empty-leg flights could save you upwards of $100,000.
Here are some examples of how much empty-leg flights can cost:
Type of Jet | Departing | Arriving | Estimated Cost |
---|---|---|---|
Large jet | New York | London | $65,000 |
Super midsize jet | New York | Los Angeles | $30,000 |
Light jet | New York | Miami | $11,000 |
Light jet | Chicago | Fort Myers | $7,800 |
Light jet | Los Angeles | Las Vegas | $4,500 |

A Regional Private Jet Cost Comparison Case Study
Pricing varies in different regions of the world for the same aircraft type.
For example, a round-trip flight in the United States, from New York City to Los Angeles, with an overnight stay, using a Challenger 601 with a typical passenger capacity of 9, will cost around $58,900. A total flight time of 5 hours and 21 minutes on the outbound leg plus 4 hours and 52 minutes on the return leg equals a total flight time of 10 hours and 21 minutes. The total round trip cost comes to about $6,544 per passenger. The cost per passenger is about $633 per hour.
However, a round-trip flight in South America using the same Challenger 601 with a typical passenger capacity of 9, flying from Sao Paulo to Caracas with an overnight stay will cost around $82,500. A flight time of 5 hours and 59 minutes on the outbound leg and 5 hours and 41 minutes of flight time on the return leg equals a total flight time of 11 hours and 41 minutes. The total round-trip cost comes to about $9,167 per passenger. The cost per passenger is about $785 per hour.
When you take an hourly cost, such as $633, per passenger and multiply it by 9 passengers, it comes to $5,697 per flying hour, multiplied by 10 hours, which equals to $56,970 in the United States. In South America, taking the hourly cost of $785 per person, multiplied by 9 passengers, comes to $7,065 per hour. This, multiplied by 10 hours of flight, equals $70,650.
Thus, when comparing apples to apples for the same flight time of 10 hours using the same aircraft type, a rental flight in the United States costs about $13,000 less than in South America.
